10 Stunning Cityscapes Without Light Pollution
There are many advantages to city life, from conveniences like 24-hour delis and reliable public transportation to all of the culture that’s right at our fingertips. But there’s one thing that’s sadly missing from our lives — starry skies. In Thierry Cohen’s thought-provoking series Darkened Cities, we get to see what various cityscapes worldwide would look like minus all of the light pollution.
The Paris-based photographer’s work is very precise; the skies that he superimposes into his photos are taken from locations that are situated on the same latitude as the original cities, and shot at the same angle. The resulting images are beautiful. Click through to see what some of the world’s brightest cities look like when the lights are off and the stars come out to play.

My biggest advocacy in life is not to make poverty history, or economic development, or even Socialism — it transcends, and maybe even be the root, of all of those. My biggest advocacy in life is knowledge. And I’m not simply talking about quantifiable manifestations of knowledge such as universal primary education or high IQ statistics. I’m talking about the ability to think for one’s self, to filter and process everything you’ve ever learned, and to not live mindlessly.
I’m not even asking everybody to have a passion or change the world. But what I’m saying is that the mortal sin of human beings is to be a dumbass. You don’t have to be a political activist unrelentingly crying for social justice under the heat of the sun. You could be a bum who sits on his ass 24 hours in a day for all you like. But regardless of how you live, what your principles and ideals are, you have to think and not be a mindless syphon of what the majority, or authority, or anyone other than yourself tell you.
Because how I see it, each creation (by the Universe, by nature, by God…whoever you believe to have created us) is delegated with a responsibility in the world — something they’re born to do, something they’re naturally capable of doing. The plants and the animals have developed a mutuality, a certain task (the ecosystem) to help one another, and to sustain the earth — and most of them aren’t even aware of it. We, human beings, are given the most humongous brain of all to be able to use it — to think. It is our essence as a human being to think. And if we’re not thinking, if you’re not thinking, then what are you being human for?
Ignorance is boring. Live curious.
